PERSONAL: Will pen another chapter in his eventful golfing life after capturing the final fully exempt card in Portugal. Produced a third round of eight under par 63 at Pinta Course, which included an inward half of 29, and then completed the job by defeating John Mashego in a play-off for sixth place. Once holed in one after his wayward tee shot struck a rock out of bounds and ricocheted into the hole, but the most fortuitous incident probably occurred at a tournament in Japan in the 1970s when he holed a five foot putt to make the cut. Had he missed, he was booked on a flight that evening that subsequently crashed, killing all on board. As a youngster, he was a champion swimmer, boxer and rugby league player before injury forced him to concentrate on golf. Brother-in-law was the late Payne Stewart.
