One of the great characters on the European Tour, he began his sporting career as a school high board diving champion but perforated an eardrum and took up golf while convalescing. His accidents continued when he suffered severe headaches after being hit on the head by a golf ball struck by an amateur in 1995.

An avid follower of Sheffield United FC, he is also a knowledgeable collector of golfing memorabilia and antiques. His beloved springer spaniel, Mookie, caused a dramatic suspension to his career in July 1999, just two days prior to the Irish Open. Tore ligaments in his ring finger and little finger of his left hand after grabbing the dog collar. Missed the rest of 1999 and the whole of 2000. Saw a specialist and underwent an operation to release the ligaments.

Won worldwide acclaim for the dignified way he handled his disqualification from The 132nd Open Championship at Royal St George’s following a scorecard mix-up with playing partner Jesper Parnevik moments after completing what he thought was a stunning 67, four under par, to put himself leader in the clubhouse after the third round.

Retired in 2007 and went on to coach and work in television.
