Father runs a golf magazine in Switzerland and it was this which sparked Clément's interest in the game at the age of 11, having played football and tried skiing too. Played for the Continent of Europe against Great Britain and Ireland at Lausanne in Switzerland in the St Andrews Trophy Match and came to the Qualifying School Finals as an amateur, having played in the Eisenhower Trophy in Malaysia. Came through Stage One and Two before gaining the 39th and final card at Emporda in November 2002. 'To be the first Swiss player on Tour since Paolo Quirici is a great thrill,' he said. 'I would love to have the chance to be the role model for the youngsters in the country because there are a lot of good young players about 18 or 20 who want to turn professional, so if I do well this year, maybe they feel that they can do it as well and in the future we might have more good Swiss players on Tour.' Made an encouraging start to his Tour career, retaining his card in 106th position.
