Robertson’s rehabilitation from a depressive illness was completed when he successfully negotiated the Qualifying School Finals to make a welcome return to The European Tour for the 2005 season. When Robertson won the 1999 Italian Open he was riding the crest of a wave and went on to play alongside Colin Montgomerie in the World Cup at The Mines Resort in Malaysia at the end of the most successful season of his career since turning professional in 1993. But the Scot fell ill on return from Far East with mystery virus. Was unable to sleep or eat for three months and weight tumbled by 21lbs to 9st 7lbs. Out of action for four months but returned in Peugeot Open de España in April and shot a then course record of 65 on his first competitive round of 2000. Missed much of the 2002 and 2003 seasons but returned on a medical exemption in 2004. Although he finished outside the top 115 he ensured he would be back in 2005 after claiming the 29th card at San Roque. The 1999 season was undoubtedly his best to date, when he gained his first Tour title, Italian Open, and finished 25th on the Order of Merit. Created a memorable weekend for his manager, Ian Doyle, who runs the successful CueMasters snooker stable including seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry. As he won the Italian Open, Hendry notched up a record seventh world snooker title. Won host of amateur titles – beat Raymond Russell in final of Scottish Amateur Championship – and played Walker Cup in 1993 but competing in the Scottish Open at Gleneagles earlier that year convinced him that professional golf was the way ahead.
