Consistency and a love of the outdoor life steered Andrew onto the European Tour via the European Challenge Tour route, for which he has the highest praise. "I knew when I turned professional in 1991 that I was not the sort of player to dive straight in and start making a big living playing golf," he said. "Although I reached the European Tour Qualifying School Finals four times out of five attempts, it was the Challenge Tour which prepared me best for my career. I've worked my way up the ladder and the Challenge Tour has definitely helped me to raise my game: It's been a good learning base." Andrew took up golf as a 12-year-old after hitting balls in a friend's garden and he enjoyed it so much that he sold his fishing gear to buy some clubs, a half set of Pin-Seekers. He went on to win the Cheshire County Championship and he played for England at youth and senior levels. He was a Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup reserve in 1991.
