Started playing golf at the age of three and was taught by his father Victor, who was a club professional. Had a glittering amateur career becoming the then-youngest player to make a DP World Tour cut in 1995 aged just 16, and winning the Amateur Championship in 1998.

Turned professional in 1999 after finishing the Masters Tournament as low amateur and won on his sixth start after joining the paid ranks at the Irish Open. He followed this with his second victory of the year at the Linde German Masters and earned the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award for 1999.

His form that season saw him qualify for his debut Ryder Cup appearance at Brookline under Captain Mark James. He was Europe’s joint-top point scorer as he earned three and a half points from four matches in his Rookie appearance.

It was the first of ten appearances in 11 Ryder Cups, only missing the 2010 Ryder Cup between 1999 and 2021 after taking a short break from the game.

Won the first of 11 PGA TOUR titles in 2001 at the MasterCard Colonial and split his time between both the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR as he recorded further victories on both sides of the Atlantic.

His first victory on home soil came at the 2002 Canarias Open de España, and he followed that with another Spanish victory at the Mallorca Classic in 2004.

Was denied a maiden Major Championship victory at Carnoustie in 2007 as he lost to Pádraig Harrington in a four-hole aggregate play-off after lipping out for par on the final hole in regulation.

Became the first Spanish winner of THE PLAYERS Championship the following year, defeating Paul Goydos in a play-off on the famous par three 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass.

Completed a wire-to-wire victory at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in 2017 as he moved back inside the top ten on the Official World Golf Ranking.

Two months later, he made his long-awaited breakthrough on his 74th Major Championship start as he became the third Spanish player to win the Masters Tournament, defeating Justin Rose in a play-off on what would have been Seve Ballesteros’s 60th birthday.

Claimed his tenth DP World Tour title at the 2011 Andalucía Masters, a tournament which he went on to win twice more in 2017 and 2018 when his charitable foundation also hosted the event. He was also named Hilton Golfer of the Year for 2017.

Wrote his name into the history books at the 2018 Ryder Cup, when a Sunday Singles victory over Rickie Fowler at Le Golf National took him to a record total of 25.5 points in nine appearances, six of them on victorious European sides.

He made his tenth Ryder Cup appearance in 2021, forming a formidable partnership with compatriot Jon Rahm. Garcia won three points from four matches, further extending his record to 28.5 points in ten appearances.
