Winner of the 2018 U.S. Amateur Championship, Hovland was low amateur at the 2019 Masters Tournament, rising to number one in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

Turned professional after earning low amateur honours at the 2019 U.S. Open, finishing 12th at Pebble Beach.

Became the first Norwegian to win on the PGA TOUR when he won the 2020 Puerto Rico Open. Won his second title later that year at the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

In 2021, Hovland became the first player from Norway to win on the DP World Tour with his victory at the BMW International Open, holding off the challenge of former World Number One and two-time Major winner Martin Kaymer to win in Munich.

Made his Ryder Cup debut at Whistling Straits in 2021, becoming the first player from Norway to represent Europe, and made his first successful title defence as he won the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba, his third PGA TOUR victory.

Ended a memorable 2021 with his fifth professional victory at the Hero World Challenge, coming back from a six-stroke deficit in the final round.

Became the first Norwegian winner of a Rolex Series event as he defeated Richard Bland in a play-off to win the 2022 Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic.

Won his fourth PGA TOUR title at the 2023 Memorial Tournament presented by Workday, defeating Denny McCarthy in a play-off to win his first tournament on American soil just two weeks after finishing runner-up at the US PGA Championship.

Ended the 2023 PGA TOUR season in stunning fashion, becoming the fifth international player to win the FedEx Cup after claiming the BMW Championship and TOUR Championship in back-to-back weeks.

Formed a formidable partnership with rookie Ludvig Åberg at the 2023 Ryder Cup as they won both their foursomes matches, including a record 9&7 victory over World Number One Scottie Scheffler and five-time Major winner Brooks Koepka. Returned three and a half points from five matches as he also beat Collin Morikawa in the Sunday singles to help Europe regain the Ryder Cup.
