Became the first amateur golfer in 29 years to win a US PGA Tour (following Doug Sanders in the 1956 Canadian Open) when he defeated Jim Thorpe in a play-off for the 1985 Western Open. Turned professional the following year and captured his second Tour victory, the Buick Open in 1988. Missed most of 1991 and 1992 due to elbow surgery and required another operation in 1996 which necessitated a special medical extension in 1997. Won the 1998 World Cup Individual title in New Zealand. Suffers from diabetes and wears an insulin pump while playing to regulate his medication.
