Was a three handicap player at the age of 22 after finishing a degree in maths and computing. Decided to take a gap year and ended up in southern Spain, where he spent a year playing golf before eventually going for his first coaching sessions and deciding to pursue a career in the game.

Took an unusual route to the top of European golf, having only turned professional at the age of 27 before spending four years on the satellite tours.
