Won the English Amateur Championship in 1974 and picked up his first professional win three years later as a 23 year old, the first of 18 victories on the European Tour. Finished inside the top 30 on the Order of Merit twenty times, including seven top-ten finishes.

Represented GB&I and Europe in the Ryder Cup seven times, and was Captain in 1999.

Finished inside the top five in The Open Championship on four occasions.

Diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2000, but resumed his professional career the following year after treatment.

Won the first of two Senior Tour titles in 2005.
