His most memorable career moments have both involved Ryder Cups. In 1985, his singles victory over Fuzzy Zoeller, who had won the US Open the year before, rubber stamped Europe's first success in 28 years. But his putt to beat Ken Green on the 18th at The Belfry in 1989 was arguably his greatest moment, as the victory ensured the Cup would remain in European hands, after the match was tied. His six successes in a lengthy and productive career as one of the most respected professionals on The European Tour, took him into the Millionaires Club just after his last Tour victory, the 1992 Roma Masters. His sharp shooting is proven by his joint nine hole Tour scoring record of 27 at Crans-sur-Sierre in the Swiss Open 1978. Has played a limited schedule on the Senior Tour since joining in 1997. Won once on the Champions Tour as a senior, in the 2001 Toshiba Senior Classic. His son Alejañdro plays on The European Tour.
