John lost his brave battle against a brain tumour in June 2006. He was 62. Born in Oxford, John turned professional in 1968 at the age of 24 and made his debut on The European Tour the following year. He would remain a regular fixture on Tour across a 25-year period with his finest moment coming in 1986, when he beat Australian Peter Fowler in a play-off to win the Jersey Open at La Moye. On turning 50 in September 1993, he joined the recently-formed European Seniors Tour and soon developed into one of its most accomplished performers, winning eight titles and topping the Order of Merit in 1994. Off the course he remained at the forefront of the Tour’s development by serving on the European Seniors Tour Committee over a ten-year period from 1996 to 2005. In addition to his legacy at the PGA European Tour, Morgan also left his mark on the Lincolnshire landscape where he designed the course at Forest Pines Golf Club. He was extremely proud of the course and with some justification, as Golf World magazine voted it their best new course in England when it opened in 1996. In the same year he became the first European Tour player to earn a card at the US Champions Tour Qualifying School and went on to amass more than $1.4m during three seasons in America, after regaining his card at the Q. School in the autumn of 1999.
