George was a regular visitor to Europe during the 1970s and one of his main claims to fame came when he won the 1975 Kerrygold International Classic title in Ireland but did not receive the £2000 first prize on account of the fact that he was in the middle of a six month period as a probationary professional and under the rules of the time could not collect prize money. However, the tournament sponsors did not let him go away empty-handed because they gave him a gold bar shaped like a block of Kerrygold butter worth about the same as the first prize. Prior to coming to Europe, George had a fine amateur career, winning the 1973 Canadian Amateur and the 1974 Porter Cup and New York State Amateur. Turning pro, he won in Ireland and at the 1975 Scandinavian Enterprise Open before going on to win four regular events on the USPGA Tour as well as the 1988 Chrysler Team Championship, partnered by Wayne Levi. Made just four appearances on the 2000 European Seniors Tour but made a considerable mark by finishing in a tie for second place at the AIB Irish Seniors and a share of seventh place in the Royal Westmoreland Barbados Open.
