His career was transformed when he won the 1988 Ebel European Masters-Swiss Open. The Englishman arrived at Crans-sur-Sierre having won just £105,670 since turning professional in 1973. He had missed eight cuts in his previous ten starts but that did not stop him putting together rounds of 68, 68, 67 and 65 to finish a single shot ahead of Seve Ballesteros, Anders Forsbrand and Ian Woosnam on 20 under par 268. It was a performance that netted him £65,543 and also extended a Tour career that seemed to be faltering after a run of bad results. The Englishman did not win another Tour title but he did achieve two second place finishes. The first had come when he finished one shot behind Sam Torrance at the 1983 Portuguese Open at Troia and he was also to come close once more four years after his win in Switzerland when he came second to Daniel Silva at the 1992 Jersey European Airways Open. Credited his victory in Switzerland to a putting tip he received from fellow Seniors Tour member David Jones.
