Captured the public's imagination the world over at Valhalla when he chased Tiger Woods to the wire before finally succumbing in the 2000 US PGA Championship after a tension-filled three-hole play-off.

The previous week had put up a stout defence of the Victor Chandler British Masters title at Woburn, where one year earlier he had won his first title. This came after 22 runners-up finishes around the world in his career.

Made an albatross two in the second round of the event, securing the unique prize of becoming a racehorse owner for a day courtesy of the sponsors.

Finally gained card at US Tour School, finishing tied 12th.

Raised in California, played soccer and baseball before concentrating on golf.

Secured financial backing early in career from Hollywood actor Joe Pesci and syndicated radio host Rick Dees.

As an amateur, partnered Phil Mickelson to foursomes win in the 1991 Walker Cup at Portmarnock, and won both singles against Ricky Willison and Garth McGimpsey.

Beat David Duval in semi-final of Amateur Championship that year but lost in final to Gary Wolstenholme.

Loves travelling at speeds of over 120mph in his father's powerboat.
