Lonard turned professional in 1989 and began his career on the PGA Tour of Australasia but then divided his time between Europe and the United States.

He was sidelined for nearly 18 months in 1993-94 after contracting Ross River Fever but he returned to top the Australasian Order of Merit twice.

Made his over-50s debut at the 2017 Senior Open Championship.
