Peter is widely regarded as one of the elder statesmen of British professional golf. He won 14 times on The European Tour and for 20 successive seasons until 1979 was ever present in the top 60 in the Order of Merit. He was elected as Captain of the PGA in 1972 and then 20 years later was one of the founding fathers of the European Seniors Tour. Peter won only once on the European Seniors Tour, at the 1993 Lawrence Batley tournament, but was a regular competitor throughout the 1990s. Still an active member of the Seniors Tour, Peter was a member of four Ryder Cup sides between 1965 and 1973 and goes into the records having achieved the first hole-in-one in the history of the match at Muirfield in 1973.
