Produced a number of notable amateur performances, including finishing runner-up at the 2008 Amateur Championship and playing in the 2009 Walker Cup before turning professional in 2010.

Became the youngest player to win the Challenge Tour Rankings in 2011, aged 20 and 290 days, and his breakthrough DP World Tour victory came in the 2013 Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

Was crowned European Number One in 2017 after a stellar season that was kick-started by victory at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA, followed by a superb second place at the WGC-Mexico Championship, a first Rolex Series win at the Open de France and a fourth place finish at the U.S. Open. A total of ten top tens helped him top the Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex, beating Justin Rose to the crown.

Followed that season up by defending his Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship title in 2018, virtually securing his place at The Ryder Cup in Paris, just a week after playing on the winning European team at the EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM.

Made a memorable Ryder Cup debut at Le Golf National, winning four points out of five - all four coming alongside his friend and playing partner Francesco Molinari in the opening two days - en route to a memorable victory for Team Europe.

Made history at the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills when his seven under par 63 equalled the record for the lowest round at a U.S. Open and the lowest score on the final day of a Major Championship.

Won his second Rolex Series event and his fifth DP World Tour title at the 2019 Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player, starting the final round six shots off the lead before beating Marcus Kinhult in a play-off. A runner-up finish the following week at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai meant he finished second in the Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex, behind Jon Rahm.

Finished inside the top five on the Race to Dubai Rankings for the fourth year in a row in 2020 in a season which included runner up results at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open.

Represented Team Europe at the Ryder Cup for a second time in 2021 at Whistling Straits.

Returned to the winner's circle in 2022 at his long-awaited defence of the Nedbank Golf Challenge, winning his sixth DP World Tour title after a thrilling final day battle with Ryan Fox at Sun City.

Captained Great Britain & Ireland at the inaugural Hero Cup in 2023.

Made his third Ryder Cup appearance at Marco Simone later that year, and secured the winning moment for Team Europe as he went 2Up with two to play against Rickie Fowler in the Sunday singles, guaranteeing the half point required for Europe to regain the Cup. He would beat Fowler 3&1 and returned three points from four matches.

Started 2024 in fine form, winning the inaugural Dubai Invitational by one stroke from Ryder Cup teammate Rory McIlroy and South Africa's Thriston Lawrence, securing his seventh DP World Tour victory.
