Introduced to the game by a friend and became proficient under the watchful eye of his long-time mentor and coach, former Open champion Roberto de Vicenzo. Like many of his countrymen, moved into the caddie ranks as a youngster and carried bags for members at the Ranacha Golf Club in Buenos Aires from the ages of nine to 21. Eventually turned professional in 1988 but waited ten years before trying his luck in Europe. Did not get beyond stage one of the Qualifying School in 1998 but returned in 1999 to achieve his goal, claiming No.37 card.
