Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open tees up with Admiral

In a momentous year for Welsh golf, insurance firm Admiral, one of Wales’ largest employers, has joined forces as the official partner to the prestigious Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open to give the sport a further boost in the run up to The Ryder Cup.

The Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open, which takes place from June 18-20, will feature a line up which includes 2006 European Ryder Cup Captain, Ian Woosnam, the 2009 European Senior Tour Number One Sam Torrance, three time Ryder Cup player Costantino Rocca and defending champion, Bertus Smit, battling it out on the world renowned links at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club.

Admiral Chief Executive, Henry Engelhardt, said he was thrilled his company has become an official partner to the event.

“It is great to be such a big part of a tournament which will include many of the iconic names of European golf,” he said.

“Since Wales won the bid to host The Ryder Cup, the excitement has been growing and I, for one, am delighted this major event is coming to Wales. We are proud to be based in Wales and have a passionate Welsh workforce based in Cardiff, Swansea and Newport.”

Woosnam will be hoping to go a couple of places better than his tied third last year, the second time running he has played in the last group on the final day in front of a packed out home support. Although he battled hard, Woosnam eventually finished five shots adrift of South African Smit.

“It is great that we have one of the biggest companies in Wales to be so closely involved in backing the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Wales Open,” said Ryder Cup Wales Chief Executive, Rob Holt.

“They are the only Welsh based company listed in the FTSE 100 after getting onto the list a few years ago and they have become a remarkable Welsh success story in the same way that we all believe The 2010 Ryder Cup will be hailed as a great Welsh success.

“They have also been involved with Ryder Cup Wales from the early days as one of our business partners, so this move is a natural progression in some ways.

”Watching the likes of Woosie and Torrance playing in Wales as part of the build up to The Ryder Cup itself is a real treat for Welsh golf fans.”
