Just 68 golfers are fully exempt for the third Senior Major Championship of the 2018 season, and 88 spots were up for grabs at 34 Sectional Qualifying sites across the United States.

The first European golfers to book their spots through qualifying were André Bossert and Jarmo Sandelin. The pair took part in qualifying at Columbus, Ohio’s Worthing Hills Country Club.

Ryder Cup player Sandelin took the spoils as he finished at the top of the leaderboard after a two under par round of 69, but Bossert had to battle through a play-off against amateur Kurt Peterson. The Swiss won with par on the second extra hole to book his place at the Broadmoor Country Club.

At the end of May, Spain’s Miguel Angel Martin was one of three golfers to qualify at the Village Links of Glen Ellyn in Illinois. Martin carded a round of 69, three under par, to finish in a share of second place and will make his fifth appearance at the U.S. Senior Open this year.

After missing out on a guaranteed spot at the 2018 U.S. Senior Open by just over €1,500, Barry Lane was one of three players to come through qualifying at The Woodlands Country Club in Texas. The 1991 Ryder Cup player finished seventh on the 2017 Staysure Tour Order of Merit – the top six are exempt for the U.S. Senior Open.

The Englishman, who has played in every U.S. Senior Open since 2012, recorded his highest finish in 2015 – 12th.
