The South African duo are both etched into European golf folklore, having been crowned European Number One four times between them, including three years in a row from 2001 – 2003.

Four-time Major winner Els, who topped the Order of Merit three times, is currently enjoying a rich vein of form, having won in back-to-back weeks on the PGA TOUR Champions earlier this month.

The 54-year-old won the Principal Charity Classic followed by the American Family Insurance Championship – defeating Steve Stricker in a play-off – to bring his over-50s tally to five victories and move to third on the Charles Schwab Cup Money List.

“It’s always a good feeling heading into Major season in good form, so I’m excited for the next few weeks,” Els said.

“As a two-time winner of The Open, I always love heading to the UK in July and being able to play Majors in back-to-back weeks is really special.

“I’d love nothing more than to play well at Royal Troon and then contend at Carnoustie the week after and join the list of players to win both The Open and the Senior Open.”

Els’ countryman Goosen became South Africa’s fourth Major Champion when he won the first of his two U.S. Open titles in 2001, defeating Mark Brooks in a play-off. He went on to lift the trophy again three years later, and now has 39 professional wins, including 14 on the DP World Tour.

“The Senior Open is one of the best tournaments on our schedule and we all look forward to teeing it up every year,” Goosen said.

“I came third on my debut in 2019 and I feel like links golf suits my game. I came inside the top ten at The Open six times during my career, so I must be doing something right.

“Carnoustie is a great championship venue and a proper test of golf, so it should be a great week.”

This will be the third time the Championship has visited Carnoustie, with 12-time Senior Major winner Bernhard Langer winning in 2010, before Paul Broadhurst’s triumph in 2016.
