Sarasti has eyes on Spanish prize

Juan Sarasti is hopeful that home comforts can work to his advantage as he goes in search of a maiden victory on the European Challenge Tour at this week’s Fred Olsen Challenge de España.

The Spaniard enjoyed his best ever finish on Europe’s top developmental tour at the event last year, when an eight under par final round of 63 earned him a share of third place, four shots behind winner Rhys Davies.

The 28 year old showed glimpses of his best form with a top ten finish in last month’s KPMG Trophy and he is excited to be returning to the stunning Tecina Golf in La Gomera, a course he knows well.

“It’s always easier playing at home,” he said. “You probably know all the referees and all the staff, a lot of the guys in the field will be Spanish too, so it’s a good tournament for us.

“La Gomera is not really home because it’s probably the longest way we have to go on the Challenge Tour, but last year it was my best week of the season so I’m excited to be going back.

“It’s a course that all the Spanish players will know very well. We play there a lot as amateurs and also on the Challenge Tour for the last few years, so I’m looking forward to doing my best.

“It’s not the toughest course but it’s very enjoyable. You have a lot of birdie opportunities which is always fun.

“I’m very confident with my game. I’m playing really well at the moment, especially off the tee, so I’m trying to win this week for the first time on the Challenge Tour.

“This year hasn’t been quite as good as expected but there’s a lot of the season to come and I’m still hoping to be in the top 15 at the end of the year – hopefully this week can be the start.”
