Rimini International Open Review

Scarpa, 27, from Venice, carded a closing 68 for 278, 10 under par, to win by two shots from a trio of Englishmen, Gordon J Brand, John Bickerton and Roger Winchester.

It was in last year's Moroccan Open that Scarpa fractured his left wrist. It put him out of action for several weeks and at the end of the season he finished 202nd in the money list having played only seven tournaments.

After his success in Rimini he said: "I played consistently all week and it is great to win my first professional event. I am concentrating on the Challenge Tour this year and hopefully this win will help me to get my card back for next year."

Brand, who closed with a 71, almost holed his tee-shot at the short 16th, the ball finishing one foot away. But in the end he had to settle for a share of second spot on 280, admitting: "I had a chance but it wasn't to be."

Bickerton carded a closing 68 for 280 to set the early target thanks to five birdies including one at the 18th from four feet. At that stage a playoff looked possible especially when Winchester matched it with his 69 closely followed by Brand.

But it needed Scarpa to falter. He didn't, in fact he extended his lead by hitting a sand wedge to three feet at the last and holing for birdie.

The best rounds of the day, three 67s, were recorded by Antony Manasson of France, New Zealander Stephen Scahill and Italian amateur Stefano Maio.
