Shane Lowry wrote his name into the record books as he fired a spotless 63 on day three of the 148th Open Championship to move four shots clear of nearest challenger Tommy Fleetwood at the top of the leaderboard.
His eight under par effort set a new course record for the revised layout at Royal Portrush Golf Club and put him in pole position to claim his first Major Championship.
The atmosphere was nothing short of electric on Saturday as Irishman Lowry was roared on by a capacity crowd but he did not look to be under any pressure, instead feeding off the considerable noise being made by his legion of fans.
Here is how social media reacted to Lowry's special third round.
The man with more Major titles than anyone else, Jack Nicklaus, was watching closely as Lowry made history.
J.B., @TommyFleetwood1 & others played beautifully but Shane, hole after hole after hole, hit it in there to a reasonable distance & made a ton of putts. That's why he leads in birdies, why he’s posted lowest 54-hole score in @TheOpen history & takes 4-shot lead into tomorrow...

Former footballers John Aldridge, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer were impressed with Lowry's efforts.

An utterly sensational round from @ShaneLowryGolf under the fierce pressure of local expectancy. An Irish winner on the island of Ireland would be seriously special. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

So was two time Open Champion and fellow Irishman Padraig Harrington.
What a great round by @ShaneLowryGolf. Shooting the low score of the week when going out with the lead. Course record. He has created so many winning options for himself in the final round. @TheOpen
