Day one digest: 2021 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

Everything you need to know from day one in Scotland.

St Andrews

Tyrrell was in a familiar spot, Horst was making headlines, dads were the order of the day and the celebrities were having a ball on day one on the links.

Here is everything you need to know from Thursday at the 2021 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Tyrrell tied in leading logjam

He may have just got back from the Ryder Cup but nothing can stop Tyrrell Hatton loving the links. The two time winner of this event carded a 64 at Carnoustie but he had plenty of company at the top of the leaderboard at eight under. Li Haotong has not made a cut all season but he found his form in spectacular style to card eight birdies at Kingsbarns, while at St Andrews, Nicolas Colsaerts and Adri Arnaus also got round in 64.

        Like father like son

Martin Kaymer has holed some pretty big putts in his career, including the one that sealed the Miracle at Medinah, but we're not sure he ever produced a bigger celebration than his father Horst on Thursday.

        Go on Horst!

        Speaking of fathers.........

It was a family affair all round as Billy Horschel was partnered by dad Billy Snr.

And Tyrrell played with dad and coach Jeffrey.

        Ryder Cuppers everywhere

It wasn't just Martin and Tyrrell teeing it up from Europe's 2021 Ryder Cup contingent.

Skipper Pádraig Harrington was playing with Shane Lowry.

        Tommy Fleetwood was playing Carnoustie.

And Vice Captain Luke Donald was also in action.

Wlad has no plans to go pro

Those of us who make our living behind a desk would give anything to be a professional golfer but it's not the life for former World Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko.

I suppose Wladimir's job didn't involve getting hit in the face anywhere near as much as those he was fighting.........

        100% record

This is the 20th edition of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and five time Olympic rowing champion Sir Steve Redgrave has played in every single one of them. "What other sport can you do that you can be walking alongside and playing with the top sports stars around?" he said. "You couldn't do it in my sport, you couldn't do it in most other people's sports. So to have that honour of being able to be part of it, us hackers doing our damage and they put up with us, is just so special for us."
