The 64-man knockout event was making its first appearance on German soil, with 2015 and 2016 Posrche European Open venue Golf Resort Bad Griesbach playing host for the third edition.

American Im was the 12th seed and the duo were all square after eight holes before the Dane turned on the burners with a stunning display.

He made six birdies in a row from the ninth and while Im did not drop a shot over that run, he simply could not keep pace with his big-hitting opponent.

Defending champion Anthony Wall was taking on fellow Englishman Sam Walker after Kristoffer Broberg's withdrawal and he was not having it all his own way as he sat one up after ten holes.

Walker won the second before Wall took the third, fifth, sixth and eighth but birdies on the ninth and tenth saw Walker fight back.

Spaniard Adrian Otaegui got himself into a strong position against France's Gary Stal, winning the third and eighth with birdies and sixth with par to sit three up after eight.

Nicolas Colsaerts knows a thing or two about match play with a Volvo World Match Play victory and a winning Ryder Cup appearance under his belt but he lost the first and fifth to sit two down after five against Ashun Wu.

Frenchman Raphaël Jacquelin was also two up against David Drysdale having won the second, fifth and seventh and surrendered the sixth in their first seven holes.

Florian Fritsch was giving the local fans something to cheer at at one up after 12 against Oliver Fisher, while Scott Jamieson, Nathan Kimsey, Nino Bertasio, Robert Rock, Rikard Karlberg, Jorge Campillo and Paul Peterson were all one up in their matches.

The matches between Grégory Havret and Haydn Porteous, Edoardo Molinari and Robert Karlsson, and Ashley Chesters and Ricardo Gouveia were all all square.
