Bergamaschi shines bright after ace

He may have only signed for a level par 71 on the first day of the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge, but a hole-in-one on the third for Filippo Bergamaschi means it’s day he won’t forget in a hurry.

The Italian recorded the second ace of his career at the par three third at Golf PGA France du Vaudreuil as he sent a nine iron, with a slight draw, straight into the hole from 150 yards on a morning of bright sunshine in Normandy.

Naturally, Bergamaschi was delighted with his hole-in-one but admits he didn’t actually know it had found the cup until he reached the green.

“I was level par today and I played really well,” he said. “I just couldn’t hole much. As you saw, the only thing I holed was a nine iron! That was the highlight of the day, it was really nice to get that.

“It was 150 yards and the front of the green has a bit of downslope towards the pin. There wasn’t much wind and I hit a good shot.

“I hit it right and it was drawing in and it pitched towards the pin, but I couldn’t actually see it going in. There was a lady next to the green and she clapped, but it was only a soft clap!

“We thought it was good but not in, but when we got there we saw the ball wedged between the flag and the hole. We knew it was in and it felt really good.

“This is my second hole-in-one. My first was in a European Tour event in Australia a couple of years ago. I couldn’t see that one either, so I’m getting used to it!”

The 27 year old finished fifth in his last event on French soil, the Hauts de France Golf Open in June, and he’s pleased with his game at present.

“I couldn’t play in the first few events so I started a little bit later on but I’m playing well," he said. "I secured a fifth place in Saint Omer, which was the best result this year.

“I feel like I could be better; I’m playing really well but I’m just not getting the results I could get. I’m on the right path so I’m sure it’s going to come.

“My long game is definitely the best bit of my game this year. My driving is good, my iron play is good, but I just haven’t holed as many putts as I wanted to.”
