Axgren Makes Himself Favourite at the Tusker Kenya Open

Sweden’s Johan Axgren made himself favourite to land his second European challenge Tour title of the season at the Tusker Kenya Open by posting a third round of three under par 67 at the Karen Golf Club to establish a three stroke advantage over England’s James Heath going into the final round.

Axgren, who began the day in a three way tie for the lead with England’s James Hepworth and South Africa’s James Kamte, played more good shots than bad as he put together seven birdies, eight pars and four bogeys to pull away from the chasing pack with a three round aggregate of ten under par 200.

Heath carded a one under 69 to move to seven under and separate himself from the seven strong group of players on six under par that includes Hepworth and Kamte.

Joining the Englishman and the South African are Frenchman Bertrand Coathalem, Denmark’s Anders S Hansen, Scotland’s Andrew McArthur, England’s Tim Milford and Welshman Mark Mouland, with England’s Gary Lockerbie and Alvaro Velasco of Spain a shot further back.

Axgren was somewhat surprised to be leading by three going into the final round but had no complaints as he made himself the odds on favourite to secure the

“I did not expect to have a three shot lead going into the final round so I am happy with that. A lot can happen in 18 holes, but it’s good to be three ahead going into the last day.

“It was up and down today – a lot like yesterday’s round. I played some great stuff to make seven birdies today, but then I dropped four shots so I have been making mistakes as well.”

Despite a few erroneous moments, Axgren is undoubtedly one of the Challenge Tour’s form players at the moment. The Swede has already won on the 2006 Schedule, taking the Kai Fieberg Costa Rica Open 2006 title after a sudden-death play-off with his countryman Alexander Noren in February, and he has maintained his level of performance at Karen.

Currently second on the Rankings behind Mexico’s Antonio Maldonado, Axgren is aware that he can assume the Challenge Tour Number One spot if he can close out his second victory if the year on Sunday afternoon. He is confident that he can do just that, which would put him in an enviable position to win back his place on The European Tour.

“I know that I can definitely win tomorrow, but I still have to go out there and do it in the last round. Winning in Costa Rica has certainly given me confidence, and I can feel that in my game at the moment.

“I am making the shots and all aspects of my game have been good at certain points this week. If I can continue to play like that then I will have a good chance to win.”
