Shots Recreated: Monty's driver-off-the-deck in Dubai

In the 1996 Omega Dubai Desert Classic, Colin Montgomerie hit a brilliant tournament-winning driver off the deck on the 72nd hole. 23 years on, can Tommy Fleetwood, Rafa Cabrera Bello or Matt Fitzpatrick do the same?

On Sunday March 17, 1996, Monty faced a decision. One shot clear of playing partner Miguel Angel Jimenez going into the final hole at Emirates Golf Club, he found the right hand side of the fairway on the par five 18th.

"Miguel had out-driven me and was about ten yards further on," Monty remembers. "He showed me his cards, if you think of a poker game. He took out his three-wood which meant he was going for it.

"I had a six iron in my hand originally. But I said to my caddie Alastair, 'If he goes for it and makes birdie, we could be on for a play-off.'

"Into the wind, the only club I could reach with was my driver..."

Monty duly went for it and found the putting surface to secure the win with one of the most memorable shots in the 30-year long history of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

More than two decades on, Monty has been back on the Majlis Course, with his original 1996 driver, to challenge three top European Tour pros to replicate his heroics.
