Twenty-five years after the birth of the European Tour, the Volvo PGA Championship carried a record prize fund of £1 million and the quality of the event was reflected in the quality of the field.

The player attracting most attention was Nick Faldo.

Following his win in the Masters Tournament when he had come from six shots behind to overhaul Greg Norman, Faldo was on the crest of a wave.

He opened with a 67, five under par, to lead after the first round. After a 69 in the second round he was still on top of the leaderboard but had been joined by Mark McNulty and Costantino Rocca.

McNulty and Rocca shared the 54-hole lead but with three holes left to play Faldo had moved back into a tie of the lead with Rocca.

But two good shots and a short pitch by Rocca on the 17th set up a birdie and with the luxury of needing a par-five on the last to take the title, he put the icing on the cake by holing from 12 feet for a birdie for a two-stroke victory.
