The Debrief: DP World Tour Championship

Jon Rahm edged out Tommy Fleetwood by one shot to clinch the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai title which also saw the Spaniard claim the 2019 Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex.

Here, we take a look at the highlights of the week at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Rampant Rahm reigns again

When Jon Rahm rolled in his birdie putt from four feet at the last, the Spaniard became just the second Spaniard to win the Harry Vardon Trophy after Seve Ballesteros and also took a bunch of records.

He became the first player to secure four Rolex Series titles, claimed his sixth European Tour crown on just his 40th start - the fastest to that mark - and took home a cool US$5million in prize money from the event and for topping the 2019 Race to Dubai.

Rahm's victory at the Mutuactivos Open de España at the start of October was his last worldwide start and after a six week break he now has three wins in a trophy laden season.

He said: "It's really so hard to believe that some of the greatest champions in European golf and Spanish golf haven't been able to accomplish what I have in just three years. That's what I can't really put my mind into."

Fleetwood's big finish falls just short

The Englishman arrived at the eighth Rolex Series event of the season as one of five players who could be crowned Europe's Number One, with eventual winner Rahm, pre-tournament leader Bernd Wiesberger, Open champion Shane Lowry and Matthew Fitzpatrick.

Fleetwood got himself in contention with a strong end to the 2019 campaign with finishes of eighth and fifth in two of the four events leading up to his first win of the season at last week's Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player.

In Dubai, Rahm had led by six shots after seven holes but Fleetwood birdied three of his last four in a 65 to set the target at 18 under and as Rahm stood on the 18th tee, the whole season was heading to a play-off before the Spaniard carded a nerveless birdie to deny the Southport native the chance to reclaim the Harry Vardon Trophy he won in 2017 by one shot.

MLV goes close once again

Mike Lorenzo-Vera has enjoyed the best campaign of his career and so nearly capped it off with his maiden victory on the European Tour.

The Frenchman finished 19th on the 2019 Race to Dubai after two second places and fourth top tens before falling short to Rahm and Fleetwood at the season finale for the biggest cheque since joining the professional ranks.

Lorenzo-Vera was on course to become the first wire to wire winner of this event until Rahm streaked ahead to lead by six shots after seven holes during the final round at Jumeirah Golf Estates, however, a patient 70 earned him third place despite being struck down by illness throughout the week.

EDGA Dubai Finale

World Number One George Groves held off the challenge of America's Chad Pfeifer to win the inaugural EDGA Dubai finale.

The 36 hole event featured some of the world's best Golfers with Disability and was taking place alongside the European Tour's season ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.

It was the second EDGA event taking place in conjunction with a Rolex Series event on the 2019 Race to Dubai after Groves finished second to Brendan Lawlor at the EDGA Scottish Open.

The Englishman has Erb’s Palsy, a condition which leaves him with 20 per cent strength in his left arm after a medical accident during birth, but that has not stopped him from rising to the top of the World Rankings for Golfers with Disability.

"It's fantastic," he said. "I'm going to go home very proud of myself, celebrate with my friends and family. It will be really good. This tour has really changed my life. I think it's just changed me as a person, changed me as a golfer."
