Mike Lorenzo-Vera turned in 33 to open up a commanding five shot lead on day two of the season ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.
The Frenchman arrived at the eighth Rolex Series event under the weather after suffering with a lung infection last week but he showed no ill effects in round one as he carded a brilliant 63 to open up a one shot lead.
He continued that form in the first nine holes of round two at Jumeirah Golf Estates to move to 12 under and lead the way from World Number Two Rory McIlroy and English pair Tommy Fleetwood and Tom Lewis.
Fleetwood is one of five players who can still win the Race to Dubai and he briefly hit the top of the Rankings for the second time this week in round two, although he had slipped back to second behind Bernd Wiesberger after ten holes.
South Africa's Christiaan Bezuidenhout was at six under, a shot clear of Belgian Thomas Pieters and Spaniard Jon Rahm.
Lorenzo-Vera made a fast start as he put an approach to five feet at the first and then played a brilliant third to get up and down and birdie the par five second.
He did well to get up and down again for par on the third but could not repeat the trick on the fifth and the lead was back to two.
McIlroy had started with five pars but he found the penalty area on the sixth to surrender a double bogey and it was Bezuidenhout who was the nearest challenger.
The Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucia Masters hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation champion holed a very long putt on the 15th to go with gains on the second, fifth, eighth, tenth and 12th.
Lewis was one of a host of players to birdie the first and while he gave back a gain from ten feet on the fourth on the next, he was alongside Bezuidenhout as he took advantage of the par five seventh.
Fleetwood was another player to birdie the first and while he dropped shots on the third and fourth, a 12 foot birdie on the fifth had him back level for the day.
He then made the most of the seventh and put his approach close at the eighth to move into a tie for second and briefly top of the Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex.
Lorenzo-Vera made a two putt birdie on the seventh to extend his lead to four and McIlroy did the same to expand the group in second - and knock Fleetwood back down to second in the season long battle.
The leader was relentless and a slippery 15 footer on the eighth moved him five ahead as Bezuidenhout dropped a shot on the 17th.
