Lombard leaps into lead

When Zander Lombard missed an eighth consecutive cut at the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation in June, his thoughts must have been turning to a fourth trip to the Qualifying School in six years. Fast forward four months and he is leading the biggest event in his homeland after firing a second round 65 alongside national hero Ernie Els. At 11 under, he holds a two-shot lead over countryman Louis Oosthuizen heading into the weekend. "We were just fighting for a birdie every hole, not looking at the leaderboard or figuring out if we were going to just make par, we were trying to make a birdie every hole," he said. "It was my mindset, I was being aggressive and being positive and it went my way today."

Samooja makes history with big bird

To make a hole-in-one is a pretty rare feat but to make an albatross is even less common. So the odds on making an albatross and a hole-in-one in the same season are starting the get through the roof. Well that is what Kalle Samooja has done on the 2019 Race to Dubai and even more impressively, they both came in the Rolex Series. The Finn holed a wedge at the 15th in round one of the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open and on Thursday he holed a four iron from 235 yards on the tenth at Gary Player Country Club to pick up three shots with just his second shot of the day.That was the fifth albatross of the season - the second in the Rolex Series - and he became the first man to do the double in the blue riband events.
