Comeback kid Herbert falls just short of history

They say it never rains but it pours - well that was certainly the case for Lucas Herbert over the weekend at the 2020 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.

The Australian held the lead after 36 holes but in constant rain and with a snapped umbrella, he carded a 79 in round three to fall six shots off the lead.

He then set about one of the comebacks of the season on day four, turning in 31 as he made five birdies in six holes and getting back into the solo lead with another gain on the tenth.

At that point he was on course for history, looking to become the first player ever on the European Tour to claim two wins from six shots back in the same season, and just the third to win having posted a 79.

He made two birdies and two bogeys on the way home to finish at nine under and while he could not claim a second victory after his triumph in Dubai, he secured his first top ten in a Rolex Series event, an incredible turnaround for a man who was considering giving up the game altogether at this event last season.

"The scorecard didn't look great yesterday but it was so tough out there," he said.

"We had three towels and went through those... my umbrella snapped halfway round, it was one of those days where it was always going to be tough and unfortunately we came in with a couple more than most other people.

"I didn't really feel like I did too much wrong yesterday and it wasn't a real reflection of how I've played this week. I'm back to playing what I did the first two rounds, which was really nice. I gave myself a chance.

"I've struggled in the Rolex Series events through my career so far and to really post a result this week that I think I was capable of gives me a lot of confidence going forward.

"The scores haven't been ridiculously low this week. We've seen a nine and eight (under) early doors but other than that, we haven't seen guys take it low around here.

"It is always hard to keep pushing on when you are playing really well through ten holes. I felt like my swing left me a little towards the end and I was fighting a little bit, but to get in the house at nine under, I'm really happy."
