The Closing Swing: All you need to know

The Closing Swing marks the final of five Global Swings on the 2024 Race to Dubai, the first of three distinct phases which precedes the historic ‘Back 9’ from September 2024 to October 2024; and two ‘DP World Tour Play-Offs’ in November 2024.

Running from the Genesis Scottish Open to the Danish Golf Championship, the Swing features five counting events with 3,000 Race to Dubai Ranking points on offer at all except the Genesis Scottish Open, with 8,000 Race to Dubai Ranking Points available at the second Rolex Series event of the year.

Starting in Scotland, the Genesis Scottish Open represents a golden opportunity to rise up the Race to Dubai Rankings in its position as a Rolex Series event, with additional points on offer that count towards both the Closing Swing and the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex.

The same week, players who haven't earned their way into the field at The Renaissance Club will still have the opportunity to climb the Swing Rankings through the ISCO Championship at Keene Trace GC in Kentucky on the PGA TOUR.

Another double week of tournament follows as the world's best assemble for the final Major Championship of the year, the 152nd Open at Royal Troon (non-counting for the Swing), while the Barracuda Championship at Tahoe Mt Club in California offers a further opportunity for Closing Swing points.

After a week's break from competition, qualified players will then head to Le Golf National for the Olympics Golf Competition (non-counting for the Swing), which runs from August 1-4.

The penultimate event sees the DP World Tour visit the Czech Republic for the D+D REAL Czech Masters at PGA National OAKS Prague, before a Swing Champion will be crowned at the end of the Danish Golf Championship, played at first-time Tour venue Lübker Golf Resort.

The Format

The 2024 season on the DP World Tour features a minimum of 44 tournaments in 24 countries and across five continents, underlining its status as golf’s global Tour.

The 2024 Race to Dubai includes three new and distinct phases – five innovative ‘Global Swings’ from November 2023 to August 2024; an historic ‘Back 9’ from September 2024 to October 2024; and two ‘DP World Tour Play-Offs’ in November 2024.

Each Swing will have its own identity and its own Champion who will each earn $200,000.

Swing Champions will also qualify for each of the ‘Back 9’ events, while they will also earn an exemption into the next Rolex Series event. In the case of the Closing Swing, this means a chance to gain exemption into the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

While points accrued in the Major Championships (in the case of the Closing this means The Open and the Olympic Games) will count on the Race to Dubai Rankings, they will not count in the Swing Rankings.

Who won the first four swings of the 2024 DP World Tour season?

Min Woo Lee carried over an encouraging end-of-season form from 2023 into the 2024 DP World Tour season as he won the Opening Swing after starring on home soil. Victory at the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship - the first event of the season - propelled Lee up the rankings, and a third-place finish two weeks later at the ISPS HANDA Australian Open all but secured his place as the first Swing Champion.

Like Lee, Rory McIlroy's performance in the first two events of 2024 set the tone and made him the man to catch at the top of the International Swing Rankings. A runner-up finish to Tommy Fleetwood at the Dubai Invitational followed a historic fourth Rolex win at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic for the Northern Irishman, and the importance of that Rolex Series victory proved enough for him to lead the way and ultimately take home the spoils.

The Asian Swing saw three first-time winners on the DP World Tour emerge in European Challenge Tour graduate Jesper Svensson, former World Number One amateur Keita Nakajima and his fellow Japanese Yuto Katsuragawa - but it was Sebastian Söderberg who topped the Asian Swing Rankings after a consistent campaign. The Swede, who opened the Asian Swing with a tie for 21st at the Porsche Singapore Open, recorded back-to-back runner-up finishes at the Hero Indian Open and ISPS HANDA Championship before ending the Swing with a third place at the Volvo China Open to claim his place as Swing Champion.

The European Swing provided plenty of drama as Linn Grant made history for a second time in Sweden, Marcel Siem returned to the winner's circle four events post-surgery, Laurie Canter broke through for his maiden victory and Ewen Ferguson claimed a third title not long after his own return after struggling with illness. Yet it was a consistent performance from Guido Migliozzi that helped the Italian to top the European Swing Rankings, starting with a top 25 at the Soudal Open. He followed it up with a top ten at the European Open and went on to claim his fourth win on the DP World Tour at the KLM Open, with a tie for 22nd in Italy a week later all but confirming him as the Rankings winner.
