Young South African stars in Tshwane Open field

Three of South Africa's most promising young talents, including two winners of European Tour events in 2016, will be in the field for the 2016 Tshwane Open at Pretoria Country Club, which takes place from February 11-14.

Brandon Stone and Haydn Porteous have both secured maiden victories on Tour this year, with Stone winning The BMW SA Open hosted by City of Ekurhuleni in January by two shots and Porteous triumphing in the following week’s Joburg Open.

Another of South Africa’s bright hopes, Zander Lombard, will also tee off in Pretoria next week. The 21 year old was second to Porteous in January, finished fourth in December’s Australian PGA Championship and was in a share of 12th at The BMW SA Open.

At the tournament's media launch, the Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Councillor Kgosientso Ramokgopa, said: “From the very start of the Tshwane Open our aim was to not only showcase our city to a greater international audience and promote our tourism potential, but to also be a source of inspiration for the youth of this city.

“We want our youth to be able to aspire to what these young golfers are achieving, and their success of late could be the spark many of our young golfers need to also go onto greater things one day.”

All three players competed in last year’s event, which was won by fellow South African George Coetzee. The three-time Tour winner took home the trophy with a score of 14 under, finishing one shot clear of Jacques Blaauw.
