With ten of qualified nations for from football’s World Cup in South Africa represented at this year’s Matrix Jersey Classic, it didn’t take too long for World Cup fever to spread among European Senior Tour players at La Moye Golf Club.

Debate on the potential winners in South Africa was as hotly contested as the tournament itself, which was won by Gordon Brand Jnr, whose nation Scotland will not be among the 32 nations in the World Cup.

The former Ryder Cup player finished on 15 under par, five strokes clear of England’s Carl Mason and South African Bobby Lincoln, who both posed for a photograph at La Moyte Golf club wearing their respective nation’s shirts.

They were joined by Paraguay’s Angel Franco, American Bob Boyd, Australia Peter Fowler, Italian Giuseppe Cali, Chile’s Angel Fernandez, Argentina’s Luis Carbonetti, and Domingo Hospital from Spain, one of the favourites for this summer’s tournament.

Andy Stubbs, Managing Director of the European Senior Tour, said:  “This year’s Matrix Jersey Classic, our 15th staged at the beautiful La Moye Golf Club has been our most successful yet. With the start of the football World Cup just around the corner, our players are no different from fans around the world in getting behind their team.

“At times like this we are reminded of the wonderful national diversity of the European Senior Tour, with players competing from every continent and tournaments as far flung as Brunei, Thailand and South Africa.”
