On Monday, the World Golf Hall of Fame Selection Commission came together to select the 2017 Induction Class. The Welshman, who won the Masters in 1991 and earned 29 European Tour titles, to rank sixth of all time, will be joined by US Ryder Cup winning captain David Love III, Lorena Ochoa, Meg Mallon and Henry Longhurst.

A two-time European Tour Player of the Year (1987, 1990), the 58 year old is now competing in his ninth season on the Senior Tour - where he has since added five more titles to his illustrious career - and continues to remains in the mix, currently sitting in eighth position in the Order of Merit.

Woosnam was the first former winner of the European Tour Order of Merit to repeat the feat on the Senior Tour when he lifted the John Jacobs Trophy in 2008 after a dream rookie season in which he won the Parkridge Polish Seniors Championship in his third event, followed by the Russian Seniors Open.

In 2006, he famously captained Europe to a record-equalling 18½-9½ victory in The Ryder Cup at The K Club in Ireland, as the team won all five sessions for the first time in the biennial contest and secured an unprecedented third consecutive victory.

In eight Ryder Cups as a player, Woosnam became the first European to claim the maximum four points from the two foursomes and two fourball matches in 1993 – a feat later matched by Sergio Garcia in 2006.

It was a memorable year for Woosnam at the top of the World Golf Rankings, as he held the mantle at number one for 50 straight weeks (1991-1992).

The five new members will be officially inducted at the World Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in New York next September.
