Wonderkid Yang keeping his feet on the ground

Yang Kuang may be set for the biggest week of his golfing life at the Volvo China Open this week - but that does not mean the 14-year-old can miss out on his school work.

Yang won the Volvo China Junior Match Play Championship in December to seal his place at Genzon Golf Club but this will not be his first professional start.

He has teed it up three times on the PGA Tour Series China, making the cut alongside the professionals just two weeks ago at the Haikou Championship.

Despite all that, the youngster is keeping his feet firmly on the ground and focusing on his education before his golf.

"Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of time to practise as I have just finished my mid-term test in school and this week I only played two rounds," said Yang, who is naturally left handed but plays golf as a right-hander.

"I am still young, so school is still my main focus. On top of that, I can get 15-20 hours golf every week.

"I know it may not be enough but I am still young and still have lots of potential to improve."

Li Haotong won the Volvo China Junior Match Play Championship in 2010 for a debut on the European Tour in 2011, and just five years later he was the Volvo China Open winner.

He has gone from strength to strength - with his last European Tour appearance being the Masters Tournament - and he hopes Yang can enjoy his experience this week.

"I think Kuang and I have the very same experience," he said. "We both won the Volvo China Junior Match Play Championship when we were young - I was 15 - and got chance to play in the Volvo China Open.

"I think he needs to grab the chance to get the experience as the more you learn now, the quicker you will grow."
