Winners meet at Catalunya Championship as Tour celebrates 50th Anniversary

The DP World Tour returns to where it all began 50 years later, when the Catalunya Championship takes place in Girona from April 28 – May 1, 2022.

This time it is the turn of PGA Catalunya to host some of the best players on the DP World Tour including five winners this season and six Ryder Cup players.

The European Tour group is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and it all started with the 1972 Spanish Open at Club Golf de Pals in Girona, where a young Antonio Garrido won and, together with Seve Ballesteros, went on to help revolutionise the world of golf in Europe. Since then, Spain has been a regular stop on the DP World Tour and every year a new generation of young golfers strive to follow in the footsteps of those who came before them.

Home favourites at the Catalunya Championship will include Pablo Larrazábal, who won his sixth DP World Tour title at the MyGolfLife Open hosted by Pecanwood in March. He is joined by four further winners on Tour this season in Scot Ewan Ferguson, Ashun Wu of China, New Zealand’s Ryan Fox and Dane Nicolai Hojgaard as well as his twin brother, Rasmus - also a winner last season.

Joining them will be six Ryder Cup players in Thomas Bjørn – who also led Europe to victory as the 2018 Ryder Cup Captain - Stephen Gallacher, Ross Fisher, Chris Wood, Thorbjørn Olesen and Bernd Wiesberger, all multiple DP World Tour winners.

Regularly ranked among the top 20 golf courses in Continental Europe, the Stadium Course at PGA Catalunya Golf and Wellness has benefited from a sustainability-focused €1million upgrade as Spain’s number one golf resort prepares to host the DP World Tour’s inaugural Catalunya Championship.
