To help you pick up this latest great prize we have a handful of suggestions, the first of which being Open specialist, Padraig Harrington. Having already won two Claret Jugs, at Carnoustie in 2007 and Royal Birkdale the following year, his pedigree is clear, but he is also a man in great form having posted four top tens from five starts on The European Tour already in 2012. Two of these were in Major Championships, the second being the US Open, where he only finished two shots off Webb Simpson’s winning mark. Harrington’s current form, mixed with his experience and Major winning experience, therefore make him one of the clear favourites heading to Royal Lytham & St Annes.
Next up is the man who came closest to a maiden Major triumph in the Open Championship when he lost to the aforementioned Harrington in a play-off at Carnoustie in 2007, Sergio Garcia. That year he had looked favourite for the title, and led going into the final round, but when he missed a short putt on 18 for the title he would eventual lose out. But the Spaniard having posted six top tens in The Open and he is also playing very well this year, having finished in the top dozen five times in nine starts, and is clearly someone to watch this year.
Ernie Els is another former champion tipped for a good week, having won up at Muirfield in 2002, and his Open is record is superb. Since 1992 the South African has had 12 top tens in the Open Championship, and he is showing a resurgence so far in 2012, putting himself in the hunt at the US Open last month. He has also come close on two occasions on the PGA Tour and is therefore a potential force to be reckoned with here.
Another favourite is Lee Westwood who is still yet to win that first Major title, but with such a premium on accuracy to avoid the 206 bunkers and the penal rough here at Royal Lytham & St Annes, this could be his week. He showed his game is looking sharp with his win at the Nordea Masters a month or so ago, and we expect him to go close once again this week.
Outside of this top four, we also expect the likes of Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter to go well here. Both played well at the recent Alstom Open de France, and both have a knack of performing on the biggest stages, McDowell winning the US Open Championship in 2010 while Poulter came close when chasing Padraig Harrington all the way home at the Open Championship in 2008.
And then there’s form horses Francesco Molinari, so close last week in losing a play-off at Castle Stuart, Branden Grace and Nicolas Colsaerts who have all won this year, and in Grace’s case three times, but few people in world golf have played better than them the past year or so.
