Willett's wonder stroke wins August SOTM

Danny Willett’s deft touch at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles has been voted by fans as the European Tour Shot of the Month for August.

Faced with a thick lie at the back of the green, and not much putting surface to work with, the Englishman cultivated a delicate effort that popped out softly onto the green and rolled out into the heart of the hole for a birdie.

This fine effort earned Willett 26 per cent of the vote, with one lucky My European Tour fan winning £150 worth of European Tour luggage for choosing the top shot.

In second place was Espen Kofstad, who claimed 21 per cent of the vote thanks to a holed bunker shot at the par five 18thhole at the ISPS Handa Wales Open. It saw him sign for an opening round of 64 on the day that he played alongside Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley as qualification for the 2014 edition of the biennial contest at Gleneagles got under way.

Gregory Bourdy finished third in the voting for August with 15 per cent thanks to another holed bunker shot, this time at the second hole on the Twenty Ten Course at The Celtic Manor Resort, en route to a fourth European Tour title in Wales.

Willett will join the previous winners from the season so far, with the best shot from each month going forward to contend the Shot of the Year prize at the end of the season.

So far in 2013 the winners have been Chris Wood (January), Charl Schwartzel (February), Anders Hansen (March), Maximilian Kieffer (April), Ernie Els (May), Justin Rose (June) and Francesco Molinari (July). All of these, plus Willett, will be hoping to follow on from Louis Oosthuizen who won last year’s prize thanks to his stunning albatross in the final round of the Masters Tournament.
