Danny Willett’s hole in one at the Volvo China Open has been voted April Shot of the Month by fans of europeantour.com.
The 26 year old Englishman’s ace – the first of his career – came during the fourth and final round at Genzon Golf Club en route to a closing 67 and a tied 24th place finish and won Willett a Volvo V40 Cross Country 4x4.
Willett’s fine five iron bounded into the cup from 209 yards on the short 12th hole and won the April poll with a convincing 34.73 per cent majority of the votes cast through My European Tour.
“I had been hitting the ball well, but you never really think you are going to get one, especially when there is a shiny new car on the tee next you for the first guy to make it,” said Willett.
“The ball landed just short and rolled in. We couldn’t actually see it, but I knew it was in from the reaction of the people behind the green.
“It was pretty cool to win such a great car too!”
One lucky winner, who voted for Willett’s victorious effort, won a luxury golf stay for two at renowned European Tour Destination PGA Catalunya Resort in Girona, Spain, recent host venue for this year’s Open de Espana.
As well as a stay at the exclusive ‘La Selva Apartments’ at the spectacular resort nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains in the north-east of the country, the successful voter claimed a round on the Stadium Course – voted Spain’s Number One Course for the third year running recently – plus dinner at the celebrated Can Xiquet restaurant.
Pablo Larrazabal’s remarkable approach at the Maybank Malaysian Open came in second in the April competition with just over 18 per cent of the vote.
The Spaniard was attacked by a swarm of hornets on the 14th hole at Kuala Lumpur G&CC and, having jumped into the lake to escape before receiving a medical time-out, went on to fire his second to a few feet resulting in an incredible birdie.
Alexander Levy’s stunning recovery shot out of the rough en route to his maiden European Tour victory at the Volvo China Open came in third spot with 17.54 per cent of the vote.
Willett joins Charl Schwartzel (January), Victor Dubuisson (February) and Miguel Ángel Jiménez (March) in contesting the Shot of the Year prize, won in 2013 by Henrik Stenson for his approach into the 72nd hole during the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.
