What's in the Bag - Ian Poulter

Ian Poulter

We took a look inside Ian Poulter's bag to find the secret to his success at the WGC-HSBC Champions

claimed his second World Golf Championship title at the WGC-HSBC Champions and we had a look inside his bag, as well as a glance at the

Genworth Statistics

, to see just how he did it.

With scoring particularly low at Mission Hills Golf Club it was essential to be firing in every facet of his game, and Poulter did just this, ranking no worse than 23rd in any statistical category for the week.

His Greens in Regulation numbers were particularly impressive, ranking first and hitting 83.3 per cent of his targets in the right number or less, while his driving was also on song in finding the short grass 76.9 per cent of the time to rank 20th in the field.

Poulter has never been known for his power from the tee, but this was also up this week, averaging almost seven yards more than 300 at Mission Hills to lie 23rd in the field.

But as the old adage goes ‘you drive for show, and putt for dough’, and Poulter did just that, ranking 14th in Putts per GIR and 23rd in Putts per Round with 1.65 and 28.5 respectively for the tournament.

And finally, evidenced by his closing up and down from sand at the last for par, Poulter’s bunker play was also exemplary, getting down in two 91.7 per cent of the time.

The Englishman proved the theory that consistency is key, and it was certainly a delight to watch Poulter showing the kind of talismanic form that helped Team Europe storm to victory at The Ryder Cup in Medinah a little over a month ago.
