This week we take a look inside the bag of the Barclays Singapore Open champion –
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño
– to see what tools of the trade made it into the hands of the latest winner on The European Tour.
‘Gonzo’ struggled with a back injury earlier this year but recent top performances at home in Spain started to indicate a fifth European Tour title might not be far away, and sure enough he got just that in Singapore, thanks in part to a rejuvenated putting display over the course of the week.
The Spaniard successfully wielded his Odyssey White Hot XG #9 putter to great effect en route to finishing the week first in putts per greens in regulation (1.614) and fourth in putts per round (28.7). These numbers are a marked improvement on his 2011
Genworth Statistics
in these areas where he currently ranks 68th in putts per GIR (1.784) and 74th in putts per round (29.7).
The proof of this success on the greens came on the 18th in regulation where faced with an 18 foot putt down the slope, curling from right to left, he drained it right in the heart to take the tournament to extra holes. He repeated this feat in the playoff on the second extra hole to take the title.
Also in the Spaniard’s bag this week were the
Cleveland
CG1 Tour irons and Cleveland 588 wedges – lofts 53 and 58 degrees. To win any week you have to hit it straight, and get it up and down when you don’t, and Fernandez-Castaño did just that round Sentosa this week.
He wielded his wedges to great affect down the stretch, and most notably again in the final few holes. Faced with having to get up and down from the fairway at the last for a par to force his way into a play-off, he fired in a controlled wedge to 18 feet which he would go on to hole. He then followed this up in the play-off hitting it inside Pagunsan on the second extra hole to set up the winning putt.
His iron play was also exemplary, but no surprise there for a player who shot 61 in the second round, hitting 94.5 per cent of the greens in regulation en route to this stunning score. In this incredible round he also hit 71.4 per cent of the fairways with his 9.5 degree Cleveland HiBore Monster XLS driver.
