What's in the Bag - Darren Fichardt

South Africa’s Darren Fichardt continued his country’s dominance of events on home soil by taking Africa Open glory and it was due in no small part to some exquisite form on the greens.

Darren Fichardt - Africa Open Winner 2013

Looking at theGenworth Financial Statisticsfor the week, the reason for Fichardt’s victory is abundantly clear; 1.54 Putts per GIR to rank second in the field, and an average of 25.5 Putts per Round to finish top of the pile.

Impressive numbers, and helped in part by a Greens in Regulation percentage of 61.1 to rank 47th, but that takes nothing away from what was clearly a player in exemplary form both on and around the greens.

This comes as no surprise, though, for a man whose numbers were equally impressive throughout 2012, ranking 64thin Putts per GIR with 1.781, and an average of 29.1 Putts per Round to rank 17th.

Fichardt clearly has great touch on the greens, but his form from the tee was also impressive at East London Golf Club, hitting three quarters of his fairways to rank 11thfor the week.

He may have wobbled coming home with three bogeys on the back nine in Sunday’s final round, but there was no stopping this putting machine from picking up his fourth European Tour win, and his second in eight months, having waited nine years for his victory last June at the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal.
