Fichardt held his nerve in what proved to be tough conditions at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Club.
Continuous rain during the course of the week meant the tournament was reduced to 54 holes of play, and finishing 15 under par, one shot ahead of his nearest competitor, was enough to secure the trophy come Sunday night.
The 41 year old placed seventh in cumulative driving accuracy over the course of the week, hitting 76.2% of all fairways. Using his TaylorMade M2 (9.5°) Fichardt’s driving distance also stood out, as the South African had an average yardage of 310, placing eighth in this field, only 13 yards shy of the biggest hitter Pep Angles – who averaged 323.
Shooting consistently low scores, all aspects of the now five-time European Tour winner’s game had to be firing, and this was certainly the case with approach play. Fichardt, armed with his TaylorMade Psi (3-9), ranked 12th in greens-in-regulation with 81.5 percent, only seven points behind the week’s most accurate shooter Aaron Rai.
As with any European Tour win the ability to get up-and-down is vital when claiming titles. This was no different in Johannesburg, as Fichardt, particularly in his final round, made great use of his Titleist Vokey SM6 wedges to help save par. Chipping close on numerous occasions gave the South African’s Odyssey 0-Works putter little work to finish off what could easily have been an occasional dropped shot.
