Chris Wood was left looking down on the rest at the climax of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters on Saturday after a thrilling eagle at 18 earned him a maiden European Tour title, so we took a look inside his bag to see just how he did it.
Having been hailed as one of the next crop of young players to come out and win, Wood had come within touching distance of his first silverware on a couple of occasions, and by comparing hisGenworth Financial Statisticsfrom 2012 with those from this past week at Doha GC it is easy to see where the improvement has come.
Last season Wood averaged 1.815 Putts per Green in Regulation to rank 149thon The European Tour, while his Putts per Round figure was not much better with 31.2 leaving him down at 188thin the list.
As the old adage goes, you drive for show and putt for dough, and in Qatar Wood finally found his putting boots en route to a massive improvement with the flat stick, ranking 15thin Putts per Round with an average of 29, while his Putts per GIR of 1.647 saw him third in the field.
Quite a turnaround and one that was backed up by strong form throughout his game, with Wood finishing sixth in Greens in Regulation having hit 81.9 per cent, while his Driving Distance of 296.5 yards saw him rank 13th, and his Driving Accuracy of 62.5 per cent saw him finish 17th; all of which are an improvement on 2012.
The numbers therefore show that it was a marked improvement on the greens, backed up by an impressive long game, which was key to Wood’s victory, and his putt on the last for a closing eagle and the win proved just that.
If that kind of putting improvement continues this season and beyond then this could be the first of many titles for Chris Wood on The European Tour.
