WGC-Mexico Championship: who qualifies?

Ahead of the first World Golf Championship of 2019 we take a closer look at what it takes to make it into the elite field for the WGC-Mexico Championship.

Although still a stroke play event contested over 72 holes, World Golf Championships have no cut and feature fewer players.

Those inside thetop 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking, both one week and two weeks prior to the event, take most of the starting spots alongside those from member tour’s2018 Orders of Merits – namely thetop 30in the US PGA Tour’sFedEx Cupand thetop 20 in theRace to Dubai.

Places in the field are also held for those inside thetop tenin the2019 Race to Dubaitwo weeks before the event, and inside thetop tenin the2019 FedEx Cupone week before the event.

Such is the global nature of WGCs that thetop two playersfromlast year’sAsian Tour,Japan Golf Tour,PGA Tour of AustralasiaandSunshine Touralso qualify for the Mexican tournament.

Since its first staging in Mexico in 2017, a place in the field has also been reserved for thehighest-ranked Mexican playerin the Official World Golf Ranking.
